History

Parent and Family Counselling Service has been operating since 1980, under the name of Parent and Youth Help.  

The name was later changed to better reflect its work with Families.

The agency is a member of CAPS New Zealand.  There are ten other member groups.  All groups are autonomous, the connecting point being the shared values about the rights of children, and the approach to child abuse prevention. 

 

Services

Counsellors are available to help people with child rearing / behavioural issues, step parenting, relationship issues, issues affecting adolescents and parental relationships.

Counsellors also work wholistically with individuals and family / whanau groups on many issues that affect family functioning (eg postnatal depression).  This includes those who have experienced the impact of Mental Health, Disability, violence issues and past abuse and Trauma.

Our Services are :

  • Whanau counselling in the clients home or at the office.
  • Family therapy for when families are experiencing difficult relationships.
  • Behavioural problems.
  • Group therapy for mothers.
  • Parent education and self development courses.
  • Telephone counselling for when a client needs to briefly check out a parenting issue.
  • Individual counselling for a range of emotional issues.

The Counselling environment we provide, is in a relaxing setting with off road parking and privacy.

All Counselling staff work from a wholistic perspective and have training and experience in a range of counselling/therapy models, Maori staff understand and practice kaupapa Maori/Maori focus counselling.

Referrals

Individuals can refer themselves, or they can be referred by whanau/family.

Or referrals can be received from organisations such as:

  • Child, Youth and Family
  • Hospital/Child Health Clinic
  • Department of Courts
  • Plunket  
  • GP's and Schools

 

Fees

The agency is a non-profit, non-Government provider for children, young people and their Families.

Referrals from organisations are subsidised.

The male counsellor contracts to the agency at $65 + GST per hour, 
he can be contacted Wednesday/Thursday.
